For this assignment you will think of a word you commonly use and write an analysis of it. This word should ideally be a slang word or a curse word. Think about how you use it every day and compare it to other meanings of the word.
The objective of this assignment is to dispute the meaning of a word as it has been used recently in public discourse, and to get students to think critically about the dictionary and other authoritative sources that we draw when establishing values and ethics. For example, if you are using the capital punishment articles, you could have students consider how we define “murder” and which acts of killing are deemed “murder” in a legal, social, ethical sense, and which are not.
Use your powers of persuasion (facts, values, ethos, pathos, and logos) to construct a sound argument to dispute the meaning of the word or phrase in question. Use at least 5 credible sources. Your paper should be at least 1500 words (not including footnotes or references, and target a specific audience. Your paper needs to have a thoroughly developed introduction and conclusion. Be sure to format your paper according to APA regulations.
